What Is Paint?
Today paints are much different from those of the early days and are used for a wide veriety of applacations. Modern paint are made up of four main componetents Pigments, Binder or Vehicle, Solvent and additives.
Pigments can be natural or synthetic. Natural pigments include mica, calcium carbonate, various clays and silicas. While synthetics include engineered molecules and synthetic silicas. Most hiding pigments are titanium dioxide.(which replaced lead in the 70's)
Binder is the actual film forming component and can be, acrylics, vinyl ethylene, polyesters, melamine resins and epoxy. Latex paint is waterborne and means aqueous dispersion. Latex rubber however is not an ingredient in latex paint.
Solvents, the main purpose of the solvents are to adjust the curing properties and viscosity of the paint, it also controls the flow and application properties.
Additives. Paint can have a wide variety of of miscellaneous additives usually in small amounts but can have a significant effect on t he product, surface tension, flow and finish appearance. Textures, flatteners, biocides (to fight bacteria) and stabilizers are common additives.
